About us

Naturalization Board is a state administrative institution functioning under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice and dealing with questions as to acquisition and deprivation of the citizenship of Latvia.

The Naturalization Board was established on 18 October 1994, and the work with applicants for the citizenship of Latvia started on 1 February 1995 when the naturalization process was launched. From 1 January 1999, the Naturalization Board has been accepting and considering the applications for registration of the status of a citizen of Latvia as well as applications for granting the citizenship of Latvia to the children of stateless persons born in Latvia after 21 August 1991.

In addition to the implementation of the Law on Citizenship, the Board has been coordinating the social integration process within the scope of its competence, promoting the process of acquisition of the citizenship of Latvia. This process includes a number of various measures directed towards informing and educating the population and their active involvement in the social life and social processes.

Regional branches and subbranches of the Board have been established corresponding to the number of non-citizens in the respective administrative territories. They carry out preliminary work with the persons applying for the citizenship of Latvia: provide consultations, accept documents as well as co-operate with local municipalities and education establishments, participate in the development and implementation of the social integration projects.
