Functions of the Ministry of Justice
Ministry of Justice is the government authority responsible for legal matters, and it is the superior authority to the government authorities subordinated to it. The Ministry reports directly to the Minister of Justice.
The functions of the Ministry of Justice include:
- Drafting, organizing and coordinating the implementation of state policy in the following fields:
- legal systems;
- court administration;
- citizenship;
- protection of personal data;
- transparency of information and supervision of electronic documents;
- public registers;
- religious matters;
- land policy;
- insolvency of business companies (merchants);
- criminal penalties, administrative penalties and enforcement of penalties.
- Ensuring of representation of the Republic of Latvia before the Court of European Communities;
- Performing other functions set forth in external normative acts.
Pursuant to the Declaration on Intended Activities of the Cabinet of Ministers the Ministry of Justice is preparing the action plan covering the actions designed to achieve the goals set forth in the Declaration in the field of Law.
Action Plan of the Ministry of Justice concerning the implementation of the Government declaration is currently pending approval by the Prime Minister.
