On Wednesday, June 12th the Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns had a meeting with Baiba Braže, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to discuss relationships between both countries after the Brexit.
Over the course of the visit, the Minister of Justice and the Ambassador discussed further cooperation after United Kingdom will leave the European Union.
During the meeting, J. Bordāns, the Minister of Justice, argued: “There is a risk that as a result of the Brexit there could be issues with data exchange and other matters; nevertheless, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia will make every effort to regulate and arrange all matters under the competence of the Ministry. Our main purpose is to ensure protection of rights of Latvian nationals, especially rights of children, and to prevent any negative effect of the Brexit on cooperation between both countries in the field of justice.”
At the same time, the minister emphasized that it is necessary to strengthen cooperation between Latvia and the United Kingdom when executing requests for legal assistance in various stages in order to ensure that nationals of the United Kingdom who have committed a crime in Latvia are held liable.
At the end of the meeting, J. Bordāns, the Minister of Justice, and Ambassador B. Braže praised the current cooperation between the competent authorities of Latvia and United Kingdom on matters pertaining to the protection of children’s rights, especially noting the operative information exchange between both countries.
