In May this year, in Floriana, Malta, the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN) high-level competition session “THEMIS 2025” in the field of European and European Union criminal procedure law took place. The aim of the competition is to strengthen, among young judges and prosecutors, theoretical and practical knowledge of EU criminal procedure law and human fundamental rights in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

This year, the competition brought together teams from 11 EU Member States, competing for excellence in knowledge, analytical skills, and the ability to present arguments on topical issues relating to judicial cooperation in criminal matters within the European Union and in Europe. The Ministry of Justice’s International Cooperation Department representative, Jūlija Muraru-Kļučica, was entrusted with the position of Chair of the competition jury. This type of high-level competition takes place in the EU every year and is attended by young judges and prosecutors from EU Member States.

The first place in the competition was awarded to the team from France, the second place to Romania, and the third place to Germany.

As noted by this year’s jury chair, Jūlija Muraru-Kļučica: “The competition session allowed participants not only to strengthen their knowledge of the principle of mutual recognition in criminal law, but also promoted the exchange of experience, legal thinking, and the consolidation of European Union values.” At the same time, J. Muraru-Kļučica points out that the insights and mutual discussions gained during the competition session are important not only for the professional growth of the participants but also for strengthening the European Union’s area of freedom, security, and justice as a whole.
