On May 23 2022, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia (MoJ) hosted the opening event of the project "Strengthening of the capacity of forensic system and inspection of the site of the event"*. The project will be implemented within the framework of the European Economic Area Grants 2014–2021 programme "International Police Cooperation and Combating Crime". The opening event was hosted by MoJ, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Latvia, the State Police, the National Forensic Science Bureau, State Centre for Forensic Medical Examination and the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS).

The project will make a significant contribution to the provision of technical capacity and competence of experts of forensic institutions, which in turn will have a positive impact on the reduction of the overall duration of the examinations in one case and will improve the support of the forensic experts on the site of the event. The project will include detailed training and adaptation of various skills from the donor state partner, the NCIS, including training of experts of the field in the use of 3D scanners at the site of the event.

*The total funding for the project "Strengthening of the capacity of forensic system and inspection of the site of the event" is estimated at 2 680 000 EUR, of which the EEA Grants funding of 85% is 2 278 000 EUR and the national co-financing of 15% is 402 000 euro, complemented by a grant of 171 000 EUR from Fund for bilateral relations under the Norway Grants Programme.
