Get a service

A person may request a re-registration of the death certificate or a statement regarding the registration of the fact of death and receive it in accordance with the procedures provided for in regulatory enactments. A re-death certificate must be obtained if it is lost, if it contains inaccuracies or defects, for which it is not possible to read the information indicated, or if it has been issued in accordance with the procedures provided for in the Latvian PSR Marriage and Family Code, i.e. until 1 September 1993 and it is necessary to use the document abroad. The fulfilment of the requests received shall be ensured by the local government family lists departments of the Republic of Latvia, diplomatic and consular missions in foreign states, the Ministry of Justice's Department of Dzimtsaraksts. The person shall pay the national fee of EUR 7.00 for the issue of the re-death certificate, presenting the relevant document from the State fee, to the persons:
1) with Group I or II Disability;
2) are under the full dependants of the State or local government;
3) recognised as poor;
4) the attainment of the age of age of an orphan or child who has been left without parental care until the age of 24;
5) a multi-child family, if one declared place of residence or additional address has been specified for it and at least three children in care thereof, including those placed in a foster family and under guardianship. The application shall specify the identification details of the document certifying the exemption.
Certified statements may be received from the Department of Justice in the form of an electronic document signed with a secure electronic signature at the electronic mail address indicated by the person (fee for service EUR 5.00) Such certified information may be obtained in accordance with the urgency procedure within five working days (a coefficient of 3 (5X3 = EUR 15.00) shall apply to the payment for the expedited provision of the service. A person pays for the service before receiving the service (the properties for performing the payment are sent after registration of the application). Persons shall be released from the fee for the preparation of a statement in the Ministry of Justice:
1) who are under the full dependants of the State or local government;
2) who has been recognised as poor;
3) the achievement of the age of age of an orphan or child left without parental care until the age of 24;
4) a multi-child family.
When submitting the application, the identification data of the document certifying the exemption shall be indicated.
Where a document is intended for use in a European Union country, a certificate or a statement, in accordance with Article 1(2) of Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 on the facilitation of the free movement of citizens by simplifying the requirements for the presentation of certain public documents in the EU, and amending Regulation (EU) No 1024/2012 (hereinafter - Regulation), a multilingual standard form (hereinafter - form) may be added to which: from the languages of the Member States of the European Union (to be indicated in the application). A multilingual standard form (as an electronic document) may be attached to the document in the Department of Justice Dzimtsaraksts. For the preparation of the form, the above-mentioned benefits and fees for the expedited provision of the service are applied. The form shall be issued for a certificate or certificate issued in Latvia during the period from 01.01.2013 The form may also be requested in any of the Latvian local government's family lists departments or diplomatic and consular missions. If the document is intended to be used in a country outside the European Union, it must be certified by Apostille (not covered by the Form Regulation) by the Latvian sworn notary.

Process description

  1. Service requests
    The Latvian national portal www.latvija.lv must select and perform an e-service “Requesting a re-death certificate or a certificate from the death register” or “Application to an institution”, or submit a personal application in person (the Department of Justice's Ministry of Latvia shall not accept visitors in person), or by sending an application to the official e-mail address of the institution, which has been signed. by e-signature or by sending it via mail to the authority. The application shall indicate the relationship between each other, attach documents certifying mutual relations and indicate the purpose of the use of the document. If a document regarding a person other than a relative is requested, the application shall state the basis of the legal interest and shall produce documents certifying it. The mandate, etc., for documents issued in another State of the European Union must be a notarised translation into Latvian. The mandate, etc., of documents issued in a country outside the European Union must be certified by Apostille and also notarially translated into Latvian. The approximate time period for completing the application form from 2 to 5 minutes.

  2. Receipt of services
    A person may receive a repeated death certificate or a statement in person in the local government correspondence department or diplomatic and consular missions selected in e-service (the Department of Justice Ministry shall not accept visitors in person) or receive a statement in his or her e-mail as an electronic document signed with a secure electronic signature.
    Required documents:
    1) a valid personal identity identification document in the Republic of Latvia;
    2) if documents attesting to relatives are requested;
    3) if requested for another person, the documents justifying the legal interest must be produced;
    4) in addition to the above, the authorised person must present a notarially certified term of office in Latvian or a letter with a translation in Latvian, if it has been drafted in the language of another State.
    The mandate, etc., for documents issued in one of the countries of the European Union must be accompanied by a notarial translation in Latvian. The mandate, etc., of documents issued in a country outside the European Union must be certified by Apostille and by notarial translation into Latvian.
