The Minister of Justice signs a memorandum of agreement with the Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister and participates in the Twinning final event 03.09.2019


On Friday, June 21st in Kiev, Ukraine the Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns signed a memorandum of agreement with the Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister (Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Stepan Kubiv, in order to promote measures associated with the protection of industrial property.

J. Bordāns, the Minister of Justice, emphasizes: “The Memorandum of Agreement clearly expresses the willingness of the Latvian Ministry of Justice and the Ukrainian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to promote the development of economic and trade, as well as industrial property in Latvia and Ukraine. This is an important step in promoting relationships between both countries and consolidating the field of industrial property, ensured by the Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia and the Ukrainian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.”

During the business trip J. Bordāns, the Minister of Justice, participated in intellectual property forum “Intellectual Property in Laws, Economics, and Technologies” which took place from June 20 to 21. The forum served as a platform for discussions about topical matters in the field of intellectual property in association with innovations and use of latest technologies.

On June 21st the Minister of Justice opened the final event of the Ukrainian Twinning project. The project was directed to strengthening the institutional capacity of the Ukrainian Supreme Court, establishing a unified court practice in justice administration. During the project implementation stage the Ministry of Justice provided 190 expert days to improve knowledge of judges and court employees.

 

“The Twinning project has helped to establish good and constructive cooperation between the Ministry of Justice, Ukrainian Supreme Court and Latvian Supreme Court. Latvia is willing to continue cooperation and support Ukraine within justice reform,” said the Minister.

Ukrainian Twinning project No. UA 12 ENPI JH 02 16 “Strengthening the institutional capacity of the Supreme Court of Ukraine in the field of human rights protection at the national level” was implemented over the course of 28 months. The project’s managing partner was The German Foundation on International Legal Cooperation.  The project was fully (100%) funded from the budget of the European Union.
